Giancarlo Savino was born in Naples in 1947 and finished his studies with a mechanical design diploma and began his artistic activity, which in addition to painting, is manifested through music, poetry and theater.
All these interests stimulate him to a more complete reflection. To think as part of a whole. Hence his theoretical and organizational "vocation" was born out of group work concept.
His constant commitment is to free the contemporary art of the asphyxial network market which, in his view, prevents his visibility and comparison.
A system that in its quest for "novelty" at all costs, is presented as self-referential. In practice, a small number of "experts" decide what is or is not art. This way of doing, creating subjection and de facto, drives away the "public" from art.
His activity began in 1966 in Naples where he participated at the Spelonca, a study by Neapolitan sculptor Gabriele Zambardino, at his first art collective.
In this study, he meets many artists, active in those years in Naples, among them, Dino Greco, painter who is close to the '58 group and with whom he establishes a relationship of friendship and learning techniques and modes and Paolo Ricci painter and journalist who from pages of the Unity, as art critic describes the cultural ferment of the city. Above all, he will encourage him to choose "full-time artist".
In 67, always in Naples, near the experimental theater (Alfred Jarry theater) under the direction of Mario and Marialuisa Santella followers of the Grotowsky’s method, he participates with actors G.Dario, E.Pedicini, M.Onorato, O. Nicolaus, staged as a creator of light effects and scenic space. Providing an "autonomous" and "independent" light with the placement of dozens of bulbs in special housing (mostly poor materials - emptied and cleaned tomato jars) that are connected to a push-button, allow you to turn the scene light on or off in a completely casual way. In particular, the "Full Out" last show where the use of "autonomous" light is taking place, it produces the highest score in the audience. This attention to lapse and casualty will be one of its stylistic features in both painting, sculpture and writing.
In 1968 he was in Naples with Arturo Morfino, musician and creator of the Play Studio. Meeting point for musical experimentation. Participate as a drummer and percussionist in the free jazz band by Mario Schiano and Bruno Limone and Arturo Morfino to experiment with concerts.
The following year, accompanied by R.Giannetti, a young writer and friend on the road meets in Milan, Dino Buzzati.
With Buzzati there is an exchange relationship that will result in an exhibition at the Cortina gallery in Milan. (see note from the 4 essays on Dino Buzzati)
In 1973 he left Naples and moved to Milan where for a few years he held a parallel activity between politics and culture on the front of the extra-parliamentary opposition. With the Revolutionary Cultural Movement where he meets artists and intellectuals such as F. Leonetti, E. Mari, P. Spagnulo. R.Carpentieri, PierAngelo Bertoli. Once again, it is the encounters to solicit new expressive ways.
It's not a good time for art and the same left where militates, bourgeois and reactionary. It is necessary to adapt, also because in the meantime, besides her daughter Paola, two other daughters were born: Stella Rossa e Maria.
In 1976 the political experience ended, he focused on artistic work and resumed contacts with galleries.
In Naples back in '79 he tried to reorganize, but a serious road accident forced him to bed for a few months and more than a year before going back to work.
In 1980 he worked on stereotypes. With a subtle manual work of collages (photoshop had not been invented yet) Savino, using a classic sequence of tourist postcards of Naples, overthrows the landscape to confuse the characteristic signs of the city. The work is presented at the Goethe Institute with the title: “Eye reading functions”. The work is supported by a catalog by the sociologist of art and literature Giovanni Bechelloni, by the philosopher Lina Mangiacapre and Maria Roccasalva. The images are in volume V of the annals of History of Italy Ed. Enaudi.
The Republic of 19 May 1981, signed by M.Bonuomo
In 1981 he realized the first urban painting in Naples.
The painting is realized on the S.Francesco stairway (corner of the millennium) with the help of Consuelo Chierici the title is "The fall of the King" and is also welcomed as a critical response to the cultural management policy in those years in Naples.
The event is widely recorded in the town press, including the country newspapers Paese Sera of 15 October 1981 “Savino drops its King on a staircase” signed by Maria di Domenico and Napoli Notte signed by Maurizio Vitiello and Salvatore Piscicelli who presents his work in the film “Metropolitan Blues” as a scene background.
In 1982 he was present in the exhibition "Texitura pittorica" - on the occasion of the XII Settembre al Borgo - Bishop’s Palace of Caserta Vecchia , at Studio Oggetto of Caserta (Gazette Caserta signed by Enzo Battarra).
In 1983 he founded together with Consuelo Chierici, Aldo Arlotta and Raffaela Mariniello the "cultural materials" in disorder and with this, organizes the first regional art exhibition. The event is called "Campania Felix" The event is widely publicized and is taken back by the national media. In addition to the visual arts section, edited by Enzo Battarra, it also includes photography including A. Biasiucci, L.Ferrara, C. Accetta, F. Donato music, theater and for the first time a review on the Neapolitan group of visual poetry (Luca, F.Capasso, A.Vitiello, G.Manigrasso, S.M.Martini, F.Piemontese, A.Russo, F.Cavallo) curated by Matteo D'Ambrosio. Since the event is organized by an association of artists, it is opposed by private galleries that see in this initiative a real interference in the activity and management of cultural information in the city. In particular, Lucio Amelio, a good and active gallerist of the Neapolitan scene of those years, activates all his "knowledge" to discredit the event. The result of this smear campaign, causes a great curiosity in the audience who rushed very numerous (it is estimated that nearly 10,000 people have visited the exhibition at Castel dell'Ovo) see: "the Morning" signed by M. Buonomo- The Espresso magazine signed by F. Vincitorio - Evening country - signed by Maria Roccasalva on Il Manifesto, Italia Oggi etc ...

Donato, A. Biasiucci. M. Balatresi, launches the “Sudi Aperti"project. “Sudi Aperti" is the ethical and organizational response to the dullness of the market and those artists who complain about the lack of visibility but are passive, without an alternative proposition. (Fridaire - signed by Gianni Montesano) Evening country - Art opens the doors. For Savino, opening the studio, putting it at the center of doing art is fundamental. This will be his first, and last but not least, attempt to direct, without filtering and mediation, between artists and audiences. The formula attracts the attention of artists and critics. Many publications in this regard: “Il Mattino”of Naples, The magazine “Juliet” art magazine and “Flash Art” by G.Perretta. “Frigidaire”, signed by G. Montesano, “NDR” and “Napoli Oggi” signed by Arcangelo Izzo. A few years later, the art historian Vitaliano Corbi will dedicate many pages to the “Studi Aperti” event in the volume: "Which artist’s avant-garde in Naples in the second half of the twentieth century?”. Once again the event finds the opposition of gallerists who do not understand the broad theoretical breath and worried that the studio could replace their galleries, criticize the operation and ask the artists not to join. Nonetheless, almost all artists participate in open day studies. The event is disseminated through a brochure featuring artist names, time and days when it is possible to visit it. For the occasion, a small size (150 copies) is compiled and photocopied in a 9 x 21 format booklet. It is the first time the audience enters an artist's studio. Here, you can talk to him, watch the finished work and the projects. All in a friendly athmosphere. The work is held at the Regina Margherita media school in Rome and involves artists such as Nicola Spezzano, Francesco Filincieri, Enrico Grasso, Salvatore Ravo, Elisabetta Catamo, Elena Cappellini, Michele de Luca and Giancarlo Savino. photos / videos by Marco Polimeni. The theme of the door, after having been discussed in all its practical and metaphorical significance with a lot of work by pupils, drawings, projects and notes, is developed by students coordinated by artists in a pictorial work on the inside of the classroom door, such as image and message to be handed to "future memory". While the outside of the door is painted by an artist. The whole process opens to the knowledge of what the artist's work is doing, how a work of art is born and how it perceives the value of giving art back to its free, public enjoyment in relation to everyday life , as the need of the soul can improve the future. It is a real appeal to artists and poets to enter the places where new generations are formed. Once again it is an action against the social model that puts money, as the only value with which to measure everything. The reflection on this experience leads to the proposal to open at the Regina Margherita school a true visual education center.
